Maharaja Trading didn't start as a software company. We started as a trading company — moving goods across oceans, navigating the paperwork-heavy realities of international commerce. The Maharaja PDF Editor is what happens when real logistics pain meets real engineering talent.
In 1994, Rajiv Mehta founded Maharaja Trading Inc. in Long Beach, California, with a simple but ambitious mandate: to connect American buyers with manufacturers across South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. Operating from the Port of Long Beach — one of the busiest freight corridors in the world — Maharaja Trading grew rapidly into a full-scale import/export conglomerate with offices in Mumbai, Dubai, Jakarta, and Shenzhen.
By the early 2000s, Maharaja Trading was coordinating over 3,500 individual shipments annually across 40+ countries. Each shipment generated an avalanche of critical documents: commercial invoices, packing lists, bills of lading, certificates of origin, HS code classification sheets, Importer Security Filings (ISF-10), letters of credit, and customs entry summaries. A single container from Shanghai to Los Angeles could require 12–18 separate PDF documents, all of which needed to be merged, stamped with the company seal, signed by the right parties, and filed with US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) within strict deadlines.
The cost of a documentation error wasn't theoretical — it was a detained container at the port, a late shipment penalty from the buyer, or a compliance violation that triggered a CBP audit. The stakes were high, the document volume was staggering, and the available tools were completely inadequate.
We were spending more time shuffling PDFs than actually running our business. We knew there had to be a better way — so we built it.
— Rajiv Mehta, Founder, Maharaja Trading LLCBy 2015, Maharaja Trading's internal document operations had become a significant operational bottleneck. Here is what the company was dealing with every single working day.
The customs and compliance team was manually downloading, renaming, and merging 200–400 individual PDFs per day using consumer-grade tools never designed for this purpose. A batch of 30 shipment documents took a skilled clerk 45–90 minutes to prepare manually. At scale, that represented the equivalent of two full-time employees doing nothing but concatenating PDFs.
Every document set required Maharaja Trading's official corporate seal, plus a "FOR CUSTOMS USE ONLY" notation on specific pages. Applying stamps manually — one document at a time, on every page — was error-prone and time-consuming. Missing a stamp on a single certificate of origin once caused a 3-day container detention at the Port of Long Beach, costing the company over $18,000 in demurrage fees.
Executing freight contracts and letters of credit with overseas suppliers required wet signatures — which meant FedEx-ing documents to Mumbai or Shanghai, waiting 3–5 days for return, and praying the courier didn't lose the package. Electronic signature tools existed, but none were designed with logistics document workflows in mind, and none integrated cleanly with the company's document batching needs.
Suppliers in emerging markets — particularly small manufacturers in Vietnam, Bangladesh, and West Africa — routinely sent scanned, non-searchable PDFs as supporting documentation. Cross-referencing HS codes, verifying unit counts, and auditing inbound documents against purchase orders was a painstaking manual process with a high margin for human error.
In 2016, Maharaja Trading's CTO — Arjun Nair, a USC-trained computer scientist who had joined the company after a decade at enterprise logistics software firms — proposed a radical solution: build an internal document processing platform from the ground up, designed specifically for the realities of high-volume, cross-border trade documentation.
Over 18 months of development, a small internal team of 6 engineers built what would eventually become the Maharaja PDF Editor. The initial version was crude but effective: a web-based tool that could batch-merge up to 100 PDFs, apply corporate stamps programmatically, and generate secure share links for external signers. The immediate productivity impact within Maharaja Trading's own operations was dramatic.
Word spread. Partner freight forwarders and customs brokers who worked with Maharaja Trading started asking: "What tool is your team using for documents? Can we get access?"
In 2019, the decision was made: spin the Maharaja PDF Editor off as a standalone B2B SaaS product. Maharaja Trading LLC restructured, Arjun Nair was appointed CEO of the SaaS division, and the platform was launched commercially to the logistics and trade industry in Q3 2019.
Rajiv Mehta establishes Maharaja Trading Inc. in Long Beach, CA, with a focus on import/export operations between the US and South Asia. First office opens near the Port of Long Beach.

The global trade system moves trillions of dollars in goods every year — but it is still largely dependent on PDF documents. Bills of lading, certificates of origin, commercial invoices, customs entry summaries: these documents are the legal and operational foundation of international commerce.
Yet for most businesses, managing these documents is a manual, error-prone, time-consuming process that creates risk and wastes resources. We know this because we lived it for 25 years before building the solution.
Our mission at Maharaja Trading LLC is simple: make document workflow invisible — so that logistics professionals can focus on moving goods and building businesses, not on manipulating PDFs.
"A container held at port because of a missing stamp on a customs document isn't a paperwork problem. It's a business crisis. We built the Maharaja PDF Editor so that no logistics company ever has to face that crisis because of preventable document errors." — Arjun Nair, CEO
In customs and trade finance, a wrong number on page 3 of a 200-page dossier can invalidate an entire submission. We engineer for accuracy first.
Trade documents contain commercially sensitive information. AES-256 encryption, CCPA/GDPR compliance, and SOC 2 certification are non-negotiable minimums — not premium add-ons.
Our 47-language OCR engine and multi-timezone support team exist because trade is inherently global. A logistics platform that only thinks domestically isn't really a logistics platform.
Every feature of the Maharaja PDF Editor was born from a real operational pain point experienced by real customs brokers, freight forwarders, or trade finance professionals — including our own team.
